CHARACTER DETAILS
Name: Mimi K. Octarian, aka. Agent 8/Eight
Canon: Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion
Canon Point: A few weeks after the events of game
Age: 16
Heba or Tian? Heba. Eight is a very ambitious and stubborn person, capable of going to the ends of the Earth (or its surface) to do what she wants and to protect what she cares about. Her primary story arc was about how she discovered a new way to live and the ends to which she is willing to go to achieve it. Though her desires are very urbane, she nonetheless holds a modern life as an aspiration of something that was never a reality for her.
Acquired Ability: Ink Manipulation. Most Inklings/Octarians have this to a degree, so the ability would allow her to control different aspects of ink manipulation, from controlling ink that’s outside of her body, shaping it into different forms, or even giving her a certain degree of control over her own physicality. As the months progress, she could gain and acquire greater affinity and increase the range she could use ink.
Personality Traits:
+ Curious: Everything started that fateful day when the Squidbeak Splatoon Agent 3 defeated the leader of the Octarian Army, King “DJ” Octavio. From that day, her entire understanding of the world changed. She had thought her culture was the only culture and that their way of living was how people should live. Seeing the strength and ability of a really fresh squidkid and listening to the divine melody of Callie and Marie, Eight became aware of a world and experiences she had never once known before. Her curiosity and fascination became insatiable, and she drew her interest to learn more of the surface and the people. This interest is something she carries with her, and she is drawn to new experiences and encounters.
+ Committed: One quality that Octarians possess is a strong sense of community and resolve to achieve their goals. Even after defecting from the Octarian army, she cannot find it in herself to forget the people she knew and respected. She still holds her former leader, King Octavio, in high esteem, and hopes the best for her people. She also knew that her heart belonged to the surface and the people above and that she needed to be true to herself. This was no easy decision and she spent years before departing from what was once her home. Her ideal world would be one in which the Octarian Army and the Inklings would set aside their differences and work together, and she will work to make that vision a reality.
+ Earnest: No matter what, Eight is an honest and forthright person. She is a horrible liar, and doesn’t really have any desire to be so if she can avoid it. The most that she is capable and comfortable doing is lying by omission. She is also eager in her interests, going to great lengths and sacrificing a lot for a chance to live on the surface for a life she has only heard about.
- Naïve: For the most part, Eight is pretty unaware of a lot of the world and how things works. She spent the first 14 years of her life completely committed to the Octarian cause and knew that her life would serve in the Octarian Army. Breaking away from this is a new experience, and there is a lot she does not know. She spent a long time trying to learn the Inkling language, and idioms and similes are difficult for her to wrap her head around. She’s fascinated by different types of cultural norms and practices. To her, having a paid job is a thrilling experience of work performance and financial autonomy. She is trying to expand her knowledge of concepts like freedom to choose, befriending strangers, and falling in love.
- Judgmental: Despite Eight’s interest and curiosity, she is still very much an Octarian at heart. Her understanding of the world is informed by the practicality and pragmatism. While she has learned an appreciation for art, sports, music, fashion, and cooking, she can be close-minded to people and ideas that don’t make sense or clash with her values. For example, forces like fate and destiny are pretty sour points for her, as destiny saw fit to see her people exiled underground for over 100 years. Likewise, she highly disapproves of cowardice and selfishness. For the most part, she is aware that she has this mindset and does reconsider her actions eventually, but can get caught up in the heat of the moment.
- Insecure: Finally, Eight is very aware that she is out of her depth when it comes to most things. As a community, Octarians are very xenophobic, and only work with outside races that they see a mutual benefit in. This has made her very uncertain when it comes to social relationships and this, coupled with her inexperience, makes starting friendships and opening up to others somewhat challenging. She is naturally shy and slow to trust other people until she feels she has a pretty good handle on who they are and what they are about. She is also very aware of her inexperience and awkwardness and doesn’t like to have her inexperience or inabilities called out.

Canon Abilities/Skills: Linking Inkling Abilities and info on Splatting as Octolings share these abilities.
A few other abilities that isn’t included in the Wiki:
- Living Hair: Octarian tentacles are quite flexible and capable of grabbing onto things. Octarians that have long enough tentacles can create subordinate Octarians by cutting one off.
- Super Jump: As a human, an Octoling can jump about five feet. As an Octopus, they shoot up into the air and propel themselves around five hundred feet in any direction.
- Regeneration: Over time, Eight's body will quickly restore damage as her body generates more ink to replace. However, her human form is very vulnerable to damage, and losing a limb can cause permanent damage and scars can potentially appear.
- Military Training: Military training is compulsory for all Octarians. She has learned how to use a variety of different weapons and is a quick learner on any tool that is new. She has also been told and encouraged to learn the importance of weapon maintenance. She also knows basic military triage, how to repair fortifications, and how to operate military vehicles.
- Octarian Engineering: Octarians are naturally intelligent and drawn to learning what makes things works. In addition, Octarian engineering is fairly advanced and consist of things like ink-based traps and anti-gravity devices. If Eight has the time and resources she could probably jury-rig a serviceable weapon, functional trap, or a basic anti-gravity lift.
Suitability: After the trials and ordeals to reclaim her memories and reach the surface, Eight was on her way to starting a new life that she had always dreamed. She will be disappointed to have this taken away from her and is already expressing distrust of the resistance in telling everyone the complete truth. However, she does feel a strong sense of commitment to her fellow abductees and is starting to recognize the value in addressing this issue that is the Sylphid menace, so it doesn’t become one for the people she cares for back home. As the months go by, she will discover the unique opportunity a multidimensional hub offers, and would becoming increasingly curious of other worlds, their customs, cultures, food, and way of life. This is very much in keeping with her desire to discover the new, and shake off the old traditions and worldview that are holding her back from embracing the cosmos.

CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE
What are your character's feelings on freedom? How would they define freedom? How important is it to them? Would they fight for it, or have they fought for it in the past? If they have, how did they go about it?
Freedom is one of the central beliefs Eight has discovered as one of most important things in life. In the past, Eight would have said freedom was the choice to fight for friends, family, and honor. She was tied closely to Octarian propaganda and militaristic dogma. Since breaking free of its mind control, she has learned freedom to mean so much more. Now, freedom means the ability to choose how you want to live, what you want be, and what goals you want to make for yourself. If a person wants to pursue music, then that is their choice! If they want to make a living selling shrimp sandwiches—strange direction to go—but hey, more power to them!! Ultimately it is up to the individual to make that choice and to live the best lives that they can.
Since the day she became aware, Eight has fought to be free. This is a core conflict of her people. One hundred years ago, her people were exiled underground and were fated to live in artificial habitants constructed in gigantic domes. When she was 14, the military leaders prepared to invade the surface. Since discovering she knew too little of the people of the surface, she had to fight passively by learning more about them. When thoughts of the surface and living up above filled her ever dream, she knew she had to leave, fighting against every expectation and obligation her people held for her. She also had to fight threats to her freedom directly. After discovering the betrayal of the Kamabo Co. and their desire to create the ultimate life form using the desiccated remains of 10,007 former octolings, she actively opposed her kidnapper, destroyed the power generators and biological weapons, and destroyed one of the last connections to ancient humans on Earth. In the end, she was able to behold her first dawn and witnessed for the first time the unlimited potential that comes with each new day.
Describe a formative moment in your character's life, something that changed them and defined who they are as a person.
In addition to the above-mentioned concert where she became aware of allure of the music and people of the surface, the other formative experience was when she found herself in the Undersea Metro. As she was reaching the surface, she and two Inklings were ambushed, abducted, and her memories were stripped from her. This experience made her become more aware of who she is and what she is about. Without any memories of herself, she only had the support of her allies and the song to propel her through a gauntlet of traps, tests, and challenges as she reclaimed her memories and sought to go to the surface. In a way, this was her quest for self-discovery and affirmation of her desire to be a part of the surface world. She also had the good fortune of forging friends who spurred her on and wanted her to succeed. When she uncovered Kamabo Co.’s plot of purging the surface of all sapient life, she changed her objective from escape to preservation. Now, she highly values the relationships she’s made, and considers herself the Octarian representative within Inkling society… though she’s also more than happy to pass as an Inkling with a really fresh hair style.
Does your character have a favorite person? If so, how would they describe that person? What do they like about that person? What do they dislike? If they don't have a favorite person, what would they look for in a favorite person? What traits would draw them to another person? What traits could they tolerate that others might not be able to?
There are two people that come to mind when it comes to her favorite people. In addition to hearing the heavenly melody, the Calamari Inkantation, Eight was impressed by the battle prowess of the newest member of the Squidbeak Splatoon, Agent 3. On a superficial level, Agent 3 is a benchmark of combat ability and skill that she admires and idolizes. Eight sees her as a kind of demigod that can defeat any and all in the defense of her people – while looking awesome doing it. On a deeper level, Marina, the Octoling member of idol group Off the Hook, is another person she admires and respects. Like Eight, Marina heard the concert of the Squid Sisters and also made her way to the surface. Since making it to the surface, Marina found a way to make it as a DJ and performer, and uses her knowledge of heavy construction and anti-gravity to make some excellent stage shows and performances. It was both Marina and Pearl who discovered that she was trapped in the Undersea Metro and worked so hard to help them to the surface. Capable, intelligent, kind and successful, Eight sees Marina as a model of what an Octarian can achieve on the surface, and hopes that she could even be half as successful as Marina.
When it comes to new people, Eight can be pretty open and tolerate a lot of different personality types. She tends to prefer people that are similar to her: serious, dedicated, and quiet, but also likes how Inklings can be spontaneous, carefree, and fun. Perhaps the one quality that she finds especially valuable is passion and mastery. She admires people who like and put their all in what they do, and attempts to be the best at the task they can be. When it comes to qualities she can tolerate that others might not be able to, her people have a long history of being combatants and soldiers. She can understand and appreciate individuals from military backgrounds and can understand growing up impoverished. The two types of people she can’t stand are entitled people, people who try to pull rank, and indolence.
What has your character's arc been like so far? How have they developed from their first appearance to their canon point?
Two years ago, a young Mimi was an Octoling soldier that knew what she was going to be. She held a nearly fatalistic belief that her life was going to be in the service of the Octarian Army and that they will strike at the Inklings or die trying. Yet, even then, she questioned the necessity of their actions. When she witnessed soldier’s willing to sacrifice themselves, she felt for the people they would leave behind. When soldiers were converted to living weapons, she questioned if that would be her fate one day. And when she saw the pain of the captives of war, she felt sorrow for their plight. But she was confident in her leader. She knew that what they were doing was right and what her people needed.
That changed when her worldview was shattered, and the scales fell from her eyes. She witnessed that the people of the surface were capable and that the music, while different, held a dignity and flavor that she could not get in her isolated world. She wasn’t ready to cast away the culture and people she grew up with, but she was fascinated and drawn to learn more. Over the two years she became a citizen of two worlds: the one that she came from and the world she had never been a part of. She studied, created her own art, and dreamed. But she also had to hide. She knew that only a small number of Octarians were at that concert, and that they could never understand past what they had been taught. For as important as this new passion was, it was one that had to be hidden within her heart.
As weeks became months, she felt her curiosity and fascination grow. She knew she couldn’t be satisfied staying where she was. With only the most meager of resources, she set out to the surface… and was immediately attacked and had her memories taken away. But the song – her dream – was something that not even a memory wipe to remove from her. With everything taken away from her, it became an anthem for her. A glimmering light within the darkest depths and constant failure. Many octolings that came before ultimately succumbed to the constant failures of the tests, but she persisted. She made friends that held her passion. She was no longer alone, and she was going to do everything she could to keep her found family and her dream safe.
Her dream is a simple dream: a life on the surface. To be a part of a community of Inklings pursuing their passions, playing games, listening to music, and working a 9 to 5 job. To aspire to be a music sensation, and to make her mark on culture and the people she had dreamed. Yet she is always a part of two worlds. Though she passes as an Inkling, a part of her knows that she is not one. As more Octolings make for the surface, she is also aware that the differences may become known. Sure, the Inklings may believe that they are simply Inklings with strange hairstyles, but how long would it be before things go into conflict again? Would everything that she fought and sacrifice for become lost like the great turf war 100 years ago?
How would you like to continue your character's arc in the game? How would you like them to develop? What would you like to have them accomplish?
Considering the amount of effort Eight took to leave the Octarian Army and reach the surface, becoming a part of a resistance movement on a planet where a majority of the hospitable land is underground would feel like a step back. She will be frustrated and angry, and question the trustworthiness of the Resistance. With time, she will begin to learn that the Sylphid threat is one that extends to her own world, and is a threat that she is uniquely set to address. She can also learn more of the cultures and peoples of the Shattered World, and learn that the multiverse is larger and grander than what she knows. I hope that she can share that enthusiasm while also be a voice of caution and pragmatism. As for CR, I would like for her to have her worldview challenged some, but more specifically I would like for her to learn to be more confident in herself and make new connections. Despite how far she’s come, she’s still has a lot to learn.
