CHARACTER DETAILS

Name: Mimi K. Octarian, aka. Agent 8/Eight
Canon: Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion
Canon Point: A few weeks after the events of game
Age: 16

Heba or Tian? Heba. Eight is a very ambitious and stubborn person, capable of going to the ends of the Earth (or its surface) to do what she wants and to protect what she cares about. Her primary story arc was about how she discovered a new way to live and the ends to which she is willing to go to achieve it. Though her desires are very urbane, she nonetheless holds a modern life as an aspiration of something that was never a reality for her.

Acquired Ability: Ink Manipulation. Most Inklings/Octarians have this to a degree, so the ability would allow her to control different aspects of ink manipulation, from controlling ink that’s outside of her body, shaping it into different forms, or even giving her a certain degree of control over her own physicality. As the months progress, she could gain and acquire greater affinity and increase the range she could use ink.

Personality Traits:
+ Curious: Everything started that fateful day when the Squidbeak Splatoon Agent 3 defeated the leader of the Octarian Army, King “DJ” Octavio. From that day, her entire understanding of the world changed. She had thought her culture was the only culture and that their way of living was how people should live. Seeing the strength and ability of a really fresh squidkid and listening to the divine melody of Callie and Marie, Eight became aware of a world and experiences she had never once known before. Her curiosity and fascination became insatiable, and she drew her interest to learn more of the surface and the people. This interest is something she carries with her, and she is drawn to new experiences and encounters.

+ Committed: One quality that Octarians possess is a strong sense of community and resolve to achieve their goals. Even after defecting from the Octarian army, she cannot find it in herself to forget the people she knew and respected. She still holds her former leader, King Octavio, in high esteem, and hopes the best for her people. She also knew that her heart belonged to the surface and the people above and that she needed to be true to herself. This was no easy decision and she spent years before departing from what was once her home. Her ideal world would be one in which the Octarian Army and the Inklings would set aside their differences and work together, and she will work to make that vision a reality.

+ Earnest: No matter what, Eight is an honest and forthright person. She is a horrible liar, and doesn’t really have any desire to be so if she can avoid it. The most that she is capable and comfortable doing is lying by omission. She is also eager in her interests, going to great lengths and sacrificing a lot for a chance to live on the surface for a life she has only heard about.

- Naïve: For the most part, Eight is pretty unaware of a lot of the world and how things works. She spent the first 14 years of her life completely committed to the Octarian cause and knew that her life would serve in the Octarian Army. Breaking away from this is a new experience, and there is a lot she does not know. She spent a long time trying to learn the Inkling language, and idioms and similes are difficult for her to wrap her head around. She’s fascinated by different types of cultural norms and practices. To her, having a paid job is a thrilling experience of work performance and financial autonomy. She is trying to expand her knowledge of concepts like freedom to choose, befriending strangers, and falling in love.

- Judgmental: Despite Eight’s interest and curiosity, she is still very much an Octarian at heart. Her understanding of the world is informed by the practicality and pragmatism. While she has learned an appreciation for art, sports, music, fashion, and cooking, she can be close-minded to people and ideas that don’t make sense or clash with her values. For example, forces like fate and destiny are pretty sour points for her, as destiny saw fit to see her people exiled underground for over 100 years. Likewise, she highly disapproves of cowardice and selfishness. For the most part, she is aware that she has this mindset and does reconsider her actions eventually, but can get caught up in the heat of the moment.

- Insecure: Finally, Eight is very aware that she is out of her depth when it comes to most things. As a community, Octarians are very xenophobic, and only work with outside races that they see a mutual benefit in. This has made her very uncertain when it comes to social relationships and this, coupled with her inexperience, makes starting friendships and opening up to others somewhat challenging. She is naturally shy and slow to trust other people until she feels she has a pretty good handle on who they are and what they are about. She is also very aware of her inexperience and awkwardness and doesn’t like to have her inexperience or inabilities called out.

History: Octo Expansion link, go~
Canon Abilities/Skills: Linking Inkling Abilities and info on Splatting as Octolings share these abilities.
A few other abilities that isn’t included in the Wiki:
- Living Hair: Octarian tentacles are quite flexible and capable of grabbing onto things. Octarians that have long enough tentacles can create subordinate Octarians by cutting one off.

- Super Jump: As a human, an Octoling can jump about five feet. As an Octopus, they shoot up into the air and propel themselves around five hundred feet in any direction.

- Regeneration: Over time, Eight's body will quickly restore damage as her body generates more ink to replace. However, her human form is very vulnerable to damage, and losing a limb can cause permanent damage and scars can potentially appear.

- Military Training: Military training is compulsory for all Octarians. She has learned how to use a variety of different weapons and is a quick learner on any tool that is new. She has also been told and encouraged to learn the importance of weapon maintenance. She also knows basic military triage, how to repair fortifications, and how to operate military vehicles.

- Octarian Engineering: Octarians are naturally intelligent and drawn to learning what makes things works. In addition, Octarian engineering is fairly advanced and consist of things like ink-based traps and anti-gravity devices. If Eight has the time and resources she could probably jury-rig a serviceable weapon, functional trap, or a basic anti-gravity lift.

Suitability: After the trials and ordeals to reclaim her memories and reach the surface, Eight was on her way to starting a new life that she had always dreamed. She will be disappointed to have this taken away from her and is already expressing distrust of the resistance in telling everyone the complete truth. However, she does feel a strong sense of commitment to her fellow abductees and is starting to recognize the value in addressing this issue that is the Sylphid menace, so it doesn’t become one for the people she cares for back home. As the months go by, she will discover the unique opportunity a multidimensional hub offers, and would becoming increasingly curious of other worlds, their customs, cultures, food, and way of life. This is very much in keeping with her desire to discover the new, and shake off the old traditions and worldview that are holding her back from embracing the cosmos.

Inventory:
- A Crusty Sean’s Crust Bucket Worker’s Outfit (worker’s bandana, black t-shirt, leggings, sneakers)
- An octobrush (see above linked picture)
- A cute octopus duffle bag, which has:
- An octophone which has about an octobyte of music, pictures, and apps from home
- Her octarian military uniform (black leather jacket, miniskirt, high heels, and garter)

CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE

What are your character's feelings on freedom? How would they define freedom? How important is it to them? Would they fight for it, or have they fought for it in the past? If they have, how did they go about it?
Freedom is one of the central beliefs Eight has discovered as one of most important things in life. In the past, Eight would have said freedom was the choice to fight for friends, family, and honor. She was tied closely to Octarian propaganda and militaristic dogma. Since breaking free of its mind control, she has learned freedom to mean so much more. Now, freedom means the ability to choose how you want to live, what you want be, and what goals you want to make for yourself. If a person wants to pursue music, then that is their choice! If they want to make a living selling shrimp sandwiches—strange direction to go—but hey, more power to them!! Ultimately it is up to the individual to make that choice and to live the best lives that they can.

Since the day she became aware, Eight has fought to be free. This is a core conflict of her people. One hundred years ago, her people were exiled underground and were fated to live in artificial habitants constructed in gigantic domes. When she was 14, the military leaders prepared to invade the surface. Since discovering she knew too little of the people of the surface, she had to fight passively by learning more about them. When thoughts of the surface and living up above filled her ever dream, she knew she had to leave, fighting against every expectation and obligation her people held for her. She also had to fight threats to her freedom directly. After discovering the betrayal of the Kamabo Co. and their desire to create the ultimate life form using the desiccated remains of 10,007 former octolings, she actively opposed her kidnapper, destroyed the power generators and biological weapons, and destroyed one of the last connections to ancient humans on Earth. In the end, she was able to behold her first dawn and witnessed for the first time the unlimited potential that comes with each new day.

Describe a formative moment in your character's life, something that changed them and defined who they are as a person.
In addition to the above-mentioned concert where she became aware of allure of the music and people of the surface, the other formative experience was when she found herself in the Undersea Metro. As she was reaching the surface, she and two Inklings were ambushed, abducted, and her memories were stripped from her. This experience made her become more aware of who she is and what she is about. Without any memories of herself, she only had the support of her allies and the song to propel her through a gauntlet of traps, tests, and challenges as she reclaimed her memories and sought to go to the surface. In a way, this was her quest for self-discovery and affirmation of her desire to be a part of the surface world. She also had the good fortune of forging friends who spurred her on and wanted her to succeed. When she uncovered Kamabo Co.’s plot of purging the surface of all sapient life, she changed her objective from escape to preservation. Now, she highly values the relationships she’s made, and considers herself the Octarian representative within Inkling society… though she’s also more than happy to pass as an Inkling with a really fresh hair style.

Does your character have a favorite person? If so, how would they describe that person? What do they like about that person? What do they dislike? If they don't have a favorite person, what would they look for in a favorite person? What traits would draw them to another person? What traits could they tolerate that others might not be able to?
There are two people that come to mind when it comes to her favorite people. In addition to hearing the heavenly melody, the Calamari Inkantation, Eight was impressed by the battle prowess of the newest member of the Squidbeak Splatoon, Agent 3. On a superficial level, Agent 3 is a benchmark of combat ability and skill that she admires and idolizes. Eight sees her as a kind of demigod that can defeat any and all in the defense of her people – while looking awesome doing it. On a deeper level, Marina, the Octoling member of idol group Off the Hook, is another person she admires and respects. Like Eight, Marina heard the concert of the Squid Sisters and also made her way to the surface. Since making it to the surface, Marina found a way to make it as a DJ and performer, and uses her knowledge of heavy construction and anti-gravity to make some excellent stage shows and performances. It was both Marina and Pearl who discovered that she was trapped in the Undersea Metro and worked so hard to help them to the surface. Capable, intelligent, kind and successful, Eight sees Marina as a model of what an Octarian can achieve on the surface, and hopes that she could even be half as successful as Marina.

When it comes to new people, Eight can be pretty open and tolerate a lot of different personality types. She tends to prefer people that are similar to her: serious, dedicated, and quiet, but also likes how Inklings can be spontaneous, carefree, and fun. Perhaps the one quality that she finds especially valuable is passion and mastery. She admires people who like and put their all in what they do, and attempts to be the best at the task they can be. When it comes to qualities she can tolerate that others might not be able to, her people have a long history of being combatants and soldiers. She can understand and appreciate individuals from military backgrounds and can understand growing up impoverished. The two types of people she can’t stand are entitled people, people who try to pull rank, and indolence.

What has your character's arc been like so far? How have they developed from their first appearance to their canon point?
Two years ago, a young Mimi was an Octoling soldier that knew what she was going to be. She held a nearly fatalistic belief that her life was going to be in the service of the Octarian Army and that they will strike at the Inklings or die trying. Yet, even then, she questioned the necessity of their actions. When she witnessed soldier’s willing to sacrifice themselves, she felt for the people they would leave behind. When soldiers were converted to living weapons, she questioned if that would be her fate one day. And when she saw the pain of the captives of war, she felt sorrow for their plight. But she was confident in her leader. She knew that what they were doing was right and what her people needed.

That changed when her worldview was shattered, and the scales fell from her eyes. She witnessed that the people of the surface were capable and that the music, while different, held a dignity and flavor that she could not get in her isolated world. She wasn’t ready to cast away the culture and people she grew up with, but she was fascinated and drawn to learn more. Over the two years she became a citizen of two worlds: the one that she came from and the world she had never been a part of. She studied, created her own art, and dreamed. But she also had to hide. She knew that only a small number of Octarians were at that concert, and that they could never understand past what they had been taught. For as important as this new passion was, it was one that had to be hidden within her heart.

As weeks became months, she felt her curiosity and fascination grow. She knew she couldn’t be satisfied staying where she was. With only the most meager of resources, she set out to the surface… and was immediately attacked and had her memories taken away. But the song – her dream – was something that not even a memory wipe to remove from her. With everything taken away from her, it became an anthem for her. A glimmering light within the darkest depths and constant failure. Many octolings that came before ultimately succumbed to the constant failures of the tests, but she persisted. She made friends that held her passion. She was no longer alone, and she was going to do everything she could to keep her found family and her dream safe.

Her dream is a simple dream: a life on the surface. To be a part of a community of Inklings pursuing their passions, playing games, listening to music, and working a 9 to 5 job. To aspire to be a music sensation, and to make her mark on culture and the people she had dreamed. Yet she is always a part of two worlds. Though she passes as an Inkling, a part of her knows that she is not one. As more Octolings make for the surface, she is also aware that the differences may become known. Sure, the Inklings may believe that they are simply Inklings with strange hairstyles, but how long would it be before things go into conflict again? Would everything that she fought and sacrifice for become lost like the great turf war 100 years ago?

How would you like to continue your character's arc in the game? How would you like them to develop? What would you like to have them accomplish?
Considering the amount of effort Eight took to leave the Octarian Army and reach the surface, becoming a part of a resistance movement on a planet where a majority of the hospitable land is underground would feel like a step back. She will be frustrated and angry, and question the trustworthiness of the Resistance. With time, she will begin to learn that the Sylphid threat is one that extends to her own world, and is a threat that she is uniquely set to address. She can also learn more of the cultures and peoples of the Shattered World, and learn that the multiverse is larger and grander than what she knows. I hope that she can share that enthusiasm while also be a voice of caution and pragmatism. As for CR, I would like for her to have her worldview challenged some, but more specifically I would like for her to learn to be more confident in herself and make new connections. Despite how far she’s come, she’s still has a lot to learn.

Personal History: The Octo Expansion Wiki for the events in her game, and Agent 8's wiki for her.

Personality:
The world I knew seems like a trap.
I'm drawn now to the strange and new...

On first blush, Eight is shy and socially awkward person. She surveys her situations carefully and only makes small but insightful observations. Yet as she gets to know people she begins to open up and become a loyal and faithful friend. A lot of the reason for this caution is because of her past and what she is. In order to understand Eight, the first thing that one needs to know is that she is an Octarian. In the Squidling's world, Octarians were (and to some extent still are) the bogeymen of the Inkling world. One hundred years ago, they went to war with the Inklings over rising tides reducing the already-limited territory. This loss forced them to live underground. Secret, elusive, and industrious the Octarians practically vanished from Inkling society and kept to themselves. For the next 100 years, the Octarians became a paramilitary organization who plotted designs to retake the energy source of the Inklings and bring the war back to Inklings to reclaim the territory.

This is the world that Agent Eight -- then known as Mimi -- grew up in. From as far back as she can remember, Mimi was taught about the evils of the Inklings on the surface, how they stole their heritage, and condemned them to live in hollowed out shells that were quickly falling apart. She studied, practiced, trained, and breathed discipline, self-mastery, and the joy of working hard. Ever a dutiful soldier to the Octarian Leader, DJ Octavio. Mimi was certain that she would follow this goal or be permanently splatted in service of the Octarian cause.

Mimi's personality embodies many of these traits. Seeing as her people were viewed as the enemy of the surface, she is naturally cautious, especially of people and situations that she does not know. She has also internalized their work-ethic, being very goal-oriented and purposeful. She likes knowing the proper way to do something and takes pride when she learns to master a skill. She is also very competitive, taking time and effort to succeed in a task in order to succeed. Yet there is more to her motivation than to simply better herself -- each skill she learns and masters makes her more useful to her fellow Octarians, and this community-oriented work ethic is something that she carries with her. She wants to be capable for the benefit of others as well as herself, and every new skill can be used in new and meaningful ways.

Your song inspired a blush of love.
It gave my heart a fresh new start.
Now I ascend to shores above.

Yet her entire world view changed when she heard the song. While on the defense squad at DJ Octavio's final confrontation with Agent 3, she bore witness to Callie and Marie's Calamari Inkantation. Listening to this song broke the spell of a decade of indoctrination. In a moment all of her certainty vanished and she became a world beyond the small and sheltered life she had been living. Yet no matter how far she moved away from the place of her birth, a part of heart still resides within Octopolis. Her soul was touched by the song and she longed to discover the new. She was thirsty to know more about the Inklings: of their world, their music, their ways, their fashion, everything! Where he mind was full of tactics and weapons maintenance, her mind drifted to the new song. She started to write poetry. She listened to new styles. She fantasized about what it would be like to join a concert; to enjoy ice cream; to work a part-time job.

Her military diligence made her very thorough in her exploration: for two years she researched and learned as much as she could about Inkling society. Her pursuit of knowledge was vast and extensive. During the two years of discovering Inkling culture, she learned something about every single shopkeeper, resident, and brand in Inkopolis -- the Inkling's capital. When her imagination of Inkopolis Square was so vivid she could imagine herself walking the streets, she knew that her heart was drawn to this new world. She was going to be a part of it. Yet despite this certainty a part of her still felt the pain of moving away from everything she knew. In her heart she apologized to DJ Octavio. She also pondered whether her old friends would think down on her for this decision. Yet she was no longer going to be a part of this war. She wanted to set aside the differences between Octarians and Inklings. She wanted more.

Unfortunately, things didn't work out entirely as intended. In the trip to enter Inkopolis from Octo Canyon, Mimi encountered two members of the Squidbeak Splatoon: a secret organization who protected Inkopolis from DJ Octavio before he could take over the surface. Before the final blow concluded the altercation, the three of them were abducted and brought to an underground research facility. Even worse, she was stripped of all of her memories. Everything she had. Everything that made her "her" was gone. With nothing else to go on, "Agent Eight" (a name that was given to her for want of another name) decided to call a truce to explore the underground and find a way to escape.

While working her way, this new group became her first social interaction since leaving her home. She was touched by their kindness and consideration. She didn't need her memories to care. She worked hard to find a way to fulfill her duty for their sake and a small pulse in her heart. As she progressed through the research facility, she made an acquaintance of Off the Hook -- a new idol group that worked closely with Eight to help her escape. They quickly were able to determine that she was an Octarian... and to her surprise, this didn't matter. What was once two voices on a phone became a type of family she had not felt before. Back in Octopolis, her desire for the surface was a secret that she had to keep from everyone. Now she had friends looking out for her. Cheering her. Comforting her. Despite the fact that she was an Octarian. Despite the fact that they hadn't even seen what she looked like. She wanted to reciprocate. She wanted to show that she cared for them to. She wanted to spread their love. When the villain within revealed its ambitions to destroy the world, Eight knew that she had to do something to protect them: for her people, for her new family, for people she didn't even know.

At last we meet, my so-called foe.
But is our fate to spray this hate?
Perhaps we'll learn in depths below.

Since reaching the surface, Eight has embraced her new life. Through the connections she made, she was able to live in a shared apartment and was even able to get a part-time job. She has taken advantage of every moment to learn more about the world and living among the Inklings. Fortunately, the Octarians are so unfamiliar with the Inklings that she was able to blend in with them with having a "fresh new hairstyle." This has come as a source of relief, and she is eager to partake in this metropolitan scene.

Despite her enthusiasm, at times she still feels like an unwanted foreigner. At her worse, this feeling can become self-conscious and overwhelmed, constantly looking at strangers with caution and worry. When she feels that other people are judging or cautious around her, she will become stand-offish and judgemental. She has also learned that she values hard work, diligence, and driven people, and greatly dislikes loud and brash people who don't think things through. However, she can overlook a lot if the person seems kind and shows a generous spirit. Despite her worries, the people who have shown her compassion makes her confident that she has made the right decision and despite those moments she still wants to do good for them. In many ways, she sees herself as a representative of Octarian culture, and wants to believe that through forming connections she will serve as the first steps toward uniting a people that had long since been at war with each other.

CRAU developments: None!

Key themes: I will embrace the new while honoring the old; we cannot allow the pain of the past to imprison our future; one must be willing to overcome any challenge to preserve the precious things in the world.

Main Motivation: Though she is far apart, her thoughts will ever be on the people of Inkopolis and returning home. She now has friends and a family to protect, and will do whatever she can to make sure that everyone she loves is safe.

Skills:
Octoling Body: Octoling bodies are weird. For starters, they are more like sentient ink-people than either octopus or a kid. Eight's body is comprised mostly of ink. An obvious flaw of this body is that she is vulnerable to being immersed in other types of ink or even basic water. When she is exposed to too much enemy ink or if she falls into a body of water that is larger than herself, she will explode in a burst of ink/whatever she absorbed too much of or dissolve. Despite this weakness, her body allows her to do a variety of different things, such as:

Shapeshifting: Eight has two forms: an octopus form and her human form. To shift an octopus form, her human body, clothes, and anything that she is holding melts and pools into a large octopus. While mostly defenseless, the octopus is a fairly small target and can be difficult to spot if one isn't looking for it. When transitioning back to a human, a mound of ink rises from where an octopus once was and she shrugs off the excessive ink. Both processes are really fast and takes less than a second to transition between.

Octopus Meld: As an octopus, her body is semi-liquid. In this form she can pass through any railing and grate as though she was a liquid. In addition, her body can meld completely within pools of her own ink, rendering her nearly invisible. The only signs that she is there is the sound of bubbles reaching the surface or if she makes splashes in the water from moving too quickly. In addition, she can also climb walls or metal wires that are covered in ink on any incline up to 90 degrees.

Ink Storage and Ink Transfer: Octolings use ink-based weaponry. As such, they possess the ability to transfer their own ink into any vessel that is in contact with their body. In general, Octolings use this for two functions -- to store excess ink in a vessel (ink tank) in order to power their weapons and to use this stored ink into liquid-fueled weapons. Octraian and Inkling technology is used to spread ink using squirt guns, paintbrushes, splat bombs, a bucket, even a tub if necessary. Once the ink is sprayed, the ink will remain in place for a while, sticking to floors, walls, and ceilings, which allows them to climb surfaces using their ink swim. As their bodies are made of ink, they can passively refill a storage container automatically given enough time, and can also increase the amount of ink they generate by melding into a pool of ink that they have already made.

Ink Color Change: So long as she is not in combat, she can freely change the color of her ink. This is noted by the change in the color of her hair tentacles and the color of her internal organs. Her octopus self also changes to suit this color. This shift makes her unable to jump into ink that she is not the same color as her.

Living Hair: While this will probably not come up, Octarian tentacles are quite flexible and capable of grabbing onto things. They are so capable, in fact, that Octarians that have long enough tentacles are capable of creating other Octarians by severing one of them. This process creates a Octotrooper. While denser than a bag full of rocks, after a while an Octotrooper will sprout another tentacle and become a Twintacle Octotrooper. Eight is pretty young for an Octoling though, and would have to wait for her hair to become much long enough for her to cut it into an Octotrooper.

Super Jump: As a human, an Octoling can jump about five feet. As an Octopus, they shoot up into the air and propel themselves around five hundred feet in any direction, nailing the landing in the flashiest of ways.

Regeneration: Provided the damage is not too excessive, Eight's body will quickly restore itself as her body generates more ink. However, losing a limb does appear to have some degree of permanence, and scars can potentially appear. In addition, when exposed too too much liquid, or when she takes too much damage, her body will explode in a shower of ink. However, when defeated her soul is surprisingly resilient (and visible!) which will seek out and find a spawn point foooor:

Splat Revival: When a spawn point is present, an Octoling can reconstruct their body by having their soul enter it and recharging their ink. All this means is that she has a long history of getting splatted and reviving at spawn points. She may become very well acquainted with the luggage car...

Military Training: Military training is compulsory for all Octarians. She has learned how to use a variety of different weapons and is a quick learner on any tool that is new. She has also been told and encouraged to learn the importance of weapon maintenance. Their precise and exacting nature makes them excellent at mathematics and geometry. She also knows basic military triage, how to repair fortifications, and how to operate military vehicles.

Octarian Engineering: Octarians are naturally intelligent and drawn to learning what makes things works. This makes them capable of breaking apart and repairing things as needed, as well as some basic-to-advance technological understanding. In addition, Octarian engineering is fairly advanced and consist of things like ink-based traps and anti-gravity devices. While no protege, if Eight has the time and resources she could probably jury-rig a serviceable weapon, functional trap, or a basic anti-gravity lift.

Eight's Determination: Far and away one of Eight's most unique quality is her determination. Over the course of 88 challenges, many of which had killed her frequently, Eight never gave up. This manifest's as a superpower where Eight's determination channels into a Skip Charge where she channels her inner hero and blasts through a stage channeling her inner hero. While she will not have such an OP power in-game, this will mostly manifest in a nearly unbreakable tenacity when her mind is set on something: she will either succeed or fight with everything she has until becomes incapacitated or splatted.

Item: Her Octoling Smartphone -- solar powered and everything! While it is probably out of service range, she likes to use it see and take pictures and type down some notes. It also has audio and video recording abilities and -- in places where its permitted -- can create text, voiced, and video chatrooms. Perhaps with some tinkering it may even one day be able to be patched in to the ICP network...
